February 14, 2013 § Leave a comment

Today we’re ogling the amazing new workspace of advertising agency JWT in Amsterdam.

Designed by design director Alrik Koudenburg and design-artist RJW Elsinga, the due created a stunning 2000 square metre, custom designed working wonderland.

JWT Amsterdam aims to ‘Seriously Surprise’ and it is fitting that their workspace does too.Exciting & beautiful things lie in wait around every corner – be it the upside-down castle at reception, the greenhouse meeting space with huge plants, the architectural tree sculptures, or the drawings from artists such as the Dutch collective Kamp Horst or the Norwegian Anders Rockum.  Visitors exploring the space discover funky Skype units, Amsterdam Canal house cabinets and complementing Eames classics and lights by Louis Poulsen.

No doubt this is a workplace with a high creative output and a happy team of employees.

Eames: The Architect & The Painter

April 24, 2012 § 2 Comments

If you are anything like us you’re obsessed by absolutely everything and anything ‘Eames’. We don’t blame you! They were just so damn cool.

We are super excited about the Australian premiere of  Eames: The Architect & The Painter – a film about the husband-and-wife team. Admired for their creations and fascinating as individuals, they have risen to iconic status in American, and international culture. ‘Eames: The Architect & The Painter’ draws from a treasure trove of archival material, as well as new interviews with friends, colleague, and experts to capture the personal story of Charles and Ray while placing them firmly in the context of their fascinating times.

The film is launching in Melbourne at the Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI) and will run from 1st June – 17th June 2012. More info here.

Design for you

Herman Miller’s Design For You contest is creating a stir in blogworld lately. No wonder, with Eames Hang-it-Alls and an Embody chair among the prizes on offer for the simple task of entering your details.

The main prizes are Eames Rockers customised by graphic artists Josh Cochran, Philip Lumbang, Mark Giglio, Chris Lee and Andrew Holder. Sadly, the competition’s not open to non-US residents, but the chairs look amazing and the little film of the illustration process (below) makes good viewing.

Better news is that there will be an Eames Hang-It-All awarded to one of you good people in December as part of Living with Living Edge on this blog. All you have to do for a chance to hang the prize in your hall is send in a nice pic of a piece of Living Edge furniture in your home. Snap!

Little books

August 22, 2010 § 1 Comment

The miniature has a charm all of its own. Here are two tiny literary masterpieces that have caught our attention recently…

One of the most widely renowned contemporary book designers, Irma Boom‘s ingenious productions have gained her international fame and led to her work being collected by many museums, notably MoMA in New York.

As part of a major retrospective of her work this year at the Amsterdam Library, Boom, a biography in miniature, has been produced. The 38 x 50mm gem contains a complete overview of her oeuvre, with commentary and more than 450 full colour illustrations.

Little (the book) documents a photographic collaboration between David and Jo-Nell Sieren. Depicting ‘quiet moments in small settings’, the book contains a series of photographs of miniatures, thoughtfully created and beautifully shot. Escape for a few minutes and browse through the results here…
