Milan report by bernabeifreeman

Milan furniture fair this year has been the busiest we have ever experienced. Yet amongst the huge crowds there were many familiar faces. It was great to see so many Australian designers represented by some of the largest international design companies including Trent Jansen with Moooi (as previously posted) and Adam Goodrum with his Stitch Chair for Cappellini.

With so much product exhibited, it was perhaps the design installations that were more inspiring. In particular Martin Baas (previously known for his burnt furniture for Moooi) caught our attention by installing his products in a working mechanics garage, where the boundaries between product and process merged.

Likewise, Rossana Orlandi’s shop and exhibition spaces merged products in production with experimental pieces and one-offs.

Other installations/products that we loved were;
1. Kartell garden at the Triennale where Freestyle opens next month.

2. Patricia Urquiola for Moroso and her range of woven chairs.

3. Edra extruded aluminium coffee table

4. Hand cut angular glass vases (designer unknown)

5. Jasper Morrison Crate series for Established and Sons.

Our most inspiring experience of the fair was visiting Achille Castiglioni’s studio space which he worked in for over 60 years. Seeing such a dedicated and rich working studio, minus the glamour of the Salone, was a humbling experience.
